The USS North Carolina (BB-55) My all-time favorite warship. As an elementary school student in North Carolina, I donated nickels and dimes to save this ship back in the early sixties.

Leo Thomas Keninger of the USS Oklahoma-- Part 2

LEO THOMAS KENINGER

BIRTH:  9 March 1921

DEATH:  7 December 1941, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

BURIAL:  Saint Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery, Ackley, Iowa.

For eight decades, Leo's marker in St. Mary's Cemetery was a cenotaph, but on June 26, 2021,  his remains were buried there with full military honors.

He had had an adventure in a big storm in the Pacific when the USS Oklahoma was returning to the United States earlier in August 1941.  From the September 13, 1941,  Mason City (Iowa) Globe-Gazette.

"The ship was caught in a severe storm similar to a typhoon.  One man was washed overboard, six seamen were injured, one motor was incapacitated, and they returned to shore with one motor in operation.

The crew are now in San Francisco awaiting completion of repairs."
