The USS North Carolina (BB-55) My all-time favorite warship. As an elementary school student in North Carolina, I donated nickels and dimes to save this ship back in the early sixties.

USS Jouett (DD-396)-- Part 5: End of the War and Decommissioning

The Jouett arrived at Oran, Algeria,  on 21 July to prepare for the next major European  operation, the invasion of southern France.  Departing Naples on 14 August, the Jouett arrived off the Delta assault area the next day, and, as troops landed, acted as command ship of the Convoy Control Group charged with the smooth routing and loading of support troops.

That duty continued until 3 September, after which she  operated on patrol out of Toulon.

In early October, the Jouett steamed off Cape Ferrat, giving gunfire support to American troops fighting ashore.

Next, she destroyed mines off San Remo on 9 October, destroyed bridges, and covered Allied minesweeping operations in the area.

Sailing from  Oran on 31 December for repairs at Charleston.  After refresher training at Casco Bay in April, the Jouett made convoy voyages to England and Cuba before the end of the war on 15 August 1945.

She was decommissioned  at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on 1 November 1945, and scrapped there in 1946.

Quite a Ship.  --GreGen
