From February 28, Communique from Stephen Smith MP, Minister of defense, Australia.
The HMAS Perth was a light cruiser, originally serving in the British Navy as the HMS Amphion, commissioned in 1931. Australia purchased the ship and commissioned it the HMAS Perth in Portsmouth, England in June 1939.
It reached Australia in March 1940 and saw early war service in the Caribbean and Pacific.
It later served in the Mediterranean Sea and saw action during the evacuation of Crete and Greece in April and May 1941 and was badly damaged by bombing with 13 killed.
It returned to Australia in August 1941. --GreGen
My Cooter's History Blog has become about 80% World War II anyway, so I figured to start a blog specific to it, especially since we're commemorating its 70th anniversary and we are quickly losing this "Greatest Generation." The quote is taken from Pearl Harbor survivor Frank Curre, who was on the USS Tennessee that day. He died Dec. 7, 2011, seventy years to the day. His photo is below at right.
