1945, 75 Years Ago.

"In Friday evening's paper the dry groceries price list for  Group One and Two stores will be published.  Use of this list will permit  the housewives to know the correct ceiling prices in the stores doing less than $250,000 business per year.

"Housewives are urged to clip the list and post it on their pantry doors or some other common place where they may refer to it when making out their shopping lists."

So, not only were items rationed, but also price controls were a part of the home front war effort even as the war was drawing to a close.

Porterhouse and mushrooms:  $1
T-Bone--  60 cents

1/2  dozen oysters: fried, stewed or raw--  35 cents
crab salad--  50 cents

hamburger-- 15 cents
hamburger and cheese--  20 cents

strawberry shortcake with whipped cream--  20 cents
pies (per slice)--  10 cents, a la mode--  15 cents

Milk--  10 cents (second glass 5 cents)
milk shakes--  15 cents
malted milk--  15 cents
Coca Cola & other sodas--  10 cents (with meals, 5 cents)

Wilmington at War: War-Time Prices in 1942

From the August 21, 2012, Wilmington (NC) Star-News "Back Then" by Scott Nunn.

AUGUST 10, 1942:  The Colonial Store in Wilmington advertised the following prices:

All popular brands of cigarettes 13 cents a pack, $1.20 a carton
Post Toasties: 6 cents a pack
Campbell's tomato soup: 2 cans for 15 cents
No. 2 can of Whitehouse apple juice: 9 cents
pot roast: 29 cents a pound
bacon: 31 cents a pound
Pillsbury flour: 61 cents for a 12 pound bag
eggs: 41 cents
bleach: 9 cents per quart bottle
peaches $1.98 a bushel
fresh shrimp: 33 cents a pound
