The USS North Carolina (BB-55) My all-time favorite warship. As an elementary school student in North Carolina, I donated nickels and dimes to save this ship back in the early sixties.

NOVEMBER 22, 2016-- BOXCAR BROWN 1942: December 1942. "Research laboratory worker at Chicago & North Western's 40th Street Yard examines paint samples used on freight cars and coaches of the railroad." By Jack Delano, the "Train Guy," OWI. Have to keep those trains looking good and provide a canvas for the graffiti folk.

Even with the war on, people still needed to keep items cold in their ice boxes. Many people did not have refrigerators yet.

Shorpy Home Front Photos: Memorial Day and a Train Bridge-- 1943

MEMORIAL DAY: 1943. May 31, 1943. "Gallipolis, Ohio. Young horn player at the Decoration Day ceremonies." Arthur Siegel, OWI.
Comment: Probably in high school band. Plays a Sousaphone. Still calling it Decoration Day then.

DRY RUN: 1943. March 1943. "Crossing the almost dry bed of the Canadian River along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in Texas." Jack Delano, OWI. That Jack sure took a lot of train pictures for OWI. he must have been its main train man.
Comment: Actually the bridge in the photo was a highway bridge by today's US-60 and US-83. Jack must have taken the photo from the train window.

A really, really big locomotive to haul those supplies and troops across the country.
JULY 28, 2014, DALLAS NOIR: 1942-- January 1942. "Elm Street Theater Row in Dallas." the war's on, but lights are still on all over the place.
Comment: Summer 1942 and blackout rules. Evidently not here.
JULY 27, 2014, GARBAGE OUT: 1943-- May 1943, New York. "Emptying garbage out into truck from Harlem apartment house." Gordon Parks, OWI.
Even with a war on, the garbage still had to be picked up.

Comments: Noticed a flag of the Philippines hanging from the ceiling. Flags of the Allies on display at Chicago's Union Station.
Another said that in 1943, her mother, a new wife, rode the train from New Orleans to Los Angeles to be with her father before he went off to the war in the Pacific. She said, "Mom, with no child in tow, made the trip sitting on her suitcase; no gallant GI offered his coach seat."

"In the train control room at the Shopton shops of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, testing pneumatic train control equipment. This rack is used for testing about eight different parts of the apparatus." By Jack Delano, OWI. Mr. Delano took a lot of train pictures during the war.

June 1943. "Pitcairn, Pa. Mrs. Bernice Stevens of Braddock, Pa., mother of one child, employed in the engine house of the Pennsylvania Railroad, earns 58 cents per hour. She is cleaning a locomotive with a high pressure nozzle. Her husband is in the Army. "

Gold Hunters Blocked From Site of Alleged Nazi Train-- Part 1

Polish authorities have blocked off a wooded area near a railroad track after scores of treasure hunters swarmed southwest Poland looking for an alleged Nazi gold train.
The city of Walbrzych and its surrounding hills are experiencing a gold rush after two men, a Pole and a German, informed authorities through their lawyers that they have found a Nazi train with armaments and valuables that reportedly went missing in the spring of 1945 while fleeing the advancing Red Army.

Another Deadly Trainwreck Took Place Just Over Three Months Earlier
On September 6, 1943, 79 were killed in a trainwreck in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Congressional Limited, touted as being able to make the run from Washington, D.C. to New York City in 3 1/2 hours had flames burst out from one of the cars' hot box which caused the axle to snap and the train went off the tracks.
As you would expect during wartime, there were about 200 servicemen aboard the train. Seventy-nine passengers from two of the cars were killed and another 117 injured.

North Carolina's Deadliest Trainwreck-- Part 1
December 17, 2013, Fayetteville (NC) Observer "Remembering the deadliest train accident in N.C. history" by Chick Jacobs.
"One forgotten pouch. One wrong step. One night of unprecedented carnage. seventy years later, officials are still not sure how many people died. The counts range from 72 to 74 with nearly 200 injured. It remains the deadliest disaster in North Carolina history."
On December 16, 1943, the Atlantic Coast Line's Tamiami West Coast Champion left Fayetteville and heading southward with 18 cars just after midnight.It was a cold night with temps in the teens. Earlier a storm had coated the region with a light snow and ice.
Less than a half hour out of Fayetteville, near Raft Swamp, a rail fractured under the train, derailing the three rear cars. The train couldn't stop for a quarter mile.
