My Cooter's History Blog has become about 80% World War II anyway, so I figured to start a blog specific to it, especially since we're commemorating its 70th anniversary and we are quickly losing this "Greatest Generation." The quote is taken from Pearl Harbor survivor Frank Curre, who was on the USS Tennessee that day. He died Dec. 7, 2011, seventy years to the day. His photo is below at right.

The War Strikes Home in Roanoke, Va.
From the January 2, 2017, Roanoke Times (Va.) "Looking Back."
1942, 75 Years Ago.
*** "The New Year spirit, dampened by the prospect of a long and hard war, flared less effusively in Roanoke last night as the city closed shop for the general holiday and waited anxiously for more definite news from the Philippines."
*** "The Virginia battalion Virginia Dare ambulance corps has received orders to mobilize at the City Market at 10 o'clock this morning."
